SLHS Basketball Breaks Records

By Shelby Jones, SLHS Freshman

The Sierra Lutheran basketball program is firing up. This year, both the varsity and JV girls set new school records, along with the JV boys. The Falcons were successful in the classroom, too, because both the girls and boys varsity teams were honored as Nevada Division IV State Academic champions on Feb. 27 at Lawlor Events Center in Reno. The girls team compiled a combined 3.87 grade point average, and the boys a 3.72 grade point average.

The varsity girls had an incredible season. They shattered school records for most wins in league and for the overall season. The Lady Falcons were 17-9 overall, and 12-4 in league. They went to NIAA Division IV regional tournament, but lost to the eventual state champion Owyhee Braves. Coach Michael Nelson said, “It was a great season. I knew it was going to be special after seeing how well we played early in the season. This team has historically taken a few games to warm up, but they came out firing this year.” Considering their improvements and disadvantages, Nelson added, “We have improved our shooting, but still need to work on it. With our size, we need to shoot in the 35 percent range to be very successful, but I do believe it is a goal that we can reach this summer.” Nelson further explained what he thought about the future for the program: “Losing only one senior means that our core remains intact. I believe we have a great chance to win the league next year. If we keep getting stronger with our shooting and take care of the ball, we should be extremely successful. The program is finally headed in the right direction. We have also had two straight successful JV years which will allow us to be competitive for years to come.” Junior Clare Davison broke some school records, also. She had the most steals in a game (12), most steals for the season (102), and most assists for the season (69). Grace Bonafede broke the record for offensive rebounds for a season with 95.

In total, the Lady Falcons had a very successful season. Clare Davison scored 131 points, plus she had 102 steals and 69 assists. Sophomore Brynna Hansen had 157 points overall, 167 rebounds, (76 offensive), 24 blocks and 60 steals. Junior Grace Bonafede scored 147 points, had 156 rebounds, (95 offensive) and 22 blocks.

As for varsity boys, they were young, inexperienced and had some tough luck with injuries. The Falcons finished with a 9-20 overall record and 5-9 in league. Alan Reed, head coach of Sierra’s varsity team says, “It was a tough year from the standpoint of only getting five wins. We were an inexperienced team with two freshmen (Zane Warkentin and Nathan Waite) starting in the backcourt. And two of our important players – sophomore Bret Walker (coming off ACL surgery) and junior Jake Cummings (broke his hand) – were out for a combined total of 23 games, so they never really got on track. Our starting five didn't play together until the 21st game of the season.”

On the other hand, Reed also had some hope, regardless of the records. “That aside, it still was a special year in a lot of ways, especially when it came to resiliency and team building,” he said. “This was a team where everyone worked hard from the first practice through the last game. We’ve got a ton of work to do, but there's much to be optimistic about.” As for the future, Reed said, “We lose one starter, but our JV program had their best season ever so, it’s going to be neat times at Sierra Lutheran.” Statistically, Sierra wasn’t at all bad. Warkentin had 298 points, along with 61 steals. Waite collected 147 points and 44 steals. Junior Tyrale Luken had 109 rebounds, 79 defensive, junior Jake Cummings had 100 rebounds, 68 defensive, while Senior Cameron Drudge had 48 assists and 52 steals total.

The JV boys had a great season, having the most consecutive wins and most wins of any season. Overall, they went 13-11. Sophomore Kyman Berger racked up 153 points and 111 rebounds. Steven Flanagan had a total of 58 steals. Thomas Mellum had 119 points, 40 assists and 52 steals. Blake Ranalla had 104 rebounds, 66 defensive.

There was also success for the JV girls, as they went undefeated in league (8-0) with a 17-3 record overall. This team experienced some unusual happenings, from postponing games due to lack of players, to playing with only four players. Sophomore Aleyna Gilson had 101 points total with 25 assists and 62 steals. Sophomore Alyssa Rowe had 96 points, 22 assists and 82 steals in total. Freshman Amanda Almeida had 131 rebounds and freshman Taylor Davison had 26 blocks.

SLHS Swimmers Have Successful Season

Although SLHS does not have its own swim program, we do have bragging rights when it comes to two of our Falcons. Sebastian Zeron and Clarice Albert are two of many Falcons that have chose to follow their passion – in this case aquatics – and we applaud them for it. Both Zeron and Albert are members of the Douglas Dolfins Swim Team, under Head Coach Kathleen Matheson.

Considering she did not compete frequently this last summer due to traveling abroad, Clarice still managed to shave time off of her races this season. Clarice joined the Douglas Dofins Swim Team when she was seven years old and competed in her first official recorded race at nine years old. This season, when Clarice competed in the Molly Lahlum Memorial Autumn Freeze 100 Free, her time was 1:07.98; when she went to King of the Hill, she shaved off time and ended up with 1:05.41. In the 200 Breast, Clarice made 3:20.79 at the Molly Lahlum Memorial Autumn Freeze; when she went to King of the Hill, she once again cut her time by over 4 seconds and ended up with 3:16.46. Clarice is hoping to attend the State Meet next year.

Zeron just returned from the 2015 State Meet in Las Vegas, where he beat his own times. A press release from the Dophins reads, "Sebastian Zeron, the final Dolfins State competitor, was also a 100% improvement swimmer dropping .14 in the 50 freestyle finals for a new AA time of 23.73 and 19th place, 1.82 in the 100 freestyle for a new AA time of 51.01 and 14th place, 1.37 in the 100 backstroke for a new BB time of 1:03.74, 1.53 in the 100 breaststroke for new A time of 1:07.29 and 16th place, 1.14 in the 100 butterfly prelims returning to place 18th, 2.40 in the 200 individual medley for a new A time of 2:09.92 and 23rd place, and shaved off .16 in the 400 individual medley."

Kudos to these excellent student athletes!

Half of Varsity Players Have a 4.0

The numbers are in. Nineteen of thirty-eight varsity Sierra Lutheran students competing in fall sports have qualified for the Nevada All-State Academic Team. In order to qualify, students must maintain a GPA of 4.0 during the season of the sport. While maintaining straight A’s is already commendable, what makes this recognition truly notable is the fact that all of these athletes did well in their studies while attending afternoon practices on weekdays and games on weekends (sometimes even during school days).

The SLHS faculty and administrative team is extremely proud of these academic scholars, who not only show dedication and perseverance in their respective sports, but in the classroom as well.

Falcons Finish Season with a Win at Coleville

Story by Shelby Jones

Coleville vs Sierra Lutheran

Halloween afternoon was game time for Sierra Lutheran. At the final game of their season, Sierra gave it their all.

Coleville kicked off to Sierra. Sierra led it to a turnover, and the Wolves took the ball. Sterling Funk blocked a pass. The Wolves decided to punt; Zach Ferenz caught it and reached the 25 yard line. Ryan Salerno earned some yards while rushing, then made a pass to Alex Westre at the 36 yard line. From there, Rocky DiMartino made it to Coleville’s 20 yard line. Salerno made a handoff to Cameron Drudge, who scored a touchdown. Logan Schinzing kicked a good PAT. Turning to defense, the Falcons kept the heat on, holding the Wolves till they punted, which Sierra took at the 15 yard line. Coleville matched the Falcons intensity and managed to hold them off as well. On defense once again, Sierra did well, Seth Houghton, Tyrale Luken and Sterling Funk causing a few QB hurries and making many tackles. Yet Coleville found a hole and scored a touchdown, then a conversion. The scores stood 8-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Sierra started on offense, Salerno throwing a pass to Jake Cummings, who caught the ball and ran a touchdown. Logan Schinzing made the PAT, adding another point for Sierra. While on offense, the Wolves were held midfield by Sierra, with Zach Ferenz taking most of the tackles. Back on offense, Sierra Lutheran took the ball at the 28 yard line. Salerno ran to 21, then 12, then 8 and finally scored a touchdown. Logan Schinzing kicked another point for Sierra. Back on defense, Cameron Drudge intercepted a pass and racked up a few tackles, along with Seth Houghton, Zach McCullough, and Zach Ferenz. The Falcons received the ball at midfield on offense but was at a loss of downs, so Jake Cummings punted it to Coleville at the 10 yard line. Coleville completed a touchdown, but missed their conversion, making the score 21-14, Sierra leading. On offense, Zach Ferenz caught the kick off at the 30 yard line and gained a bit more before he was stopped. Ryan Salerno rushed the ball again for a touchdown; Logan Schinzing kicked for the point after. Sierra led 28-14 at the end of the second quarter.

Coleville starts out with the ball in the 3rd quarter, but Sterling Funk tackled, causing a fumble, and leading to Alex Westre recovering the ball. Sierra couldn’t gain enough yardage, casing a turnover. Once again, Sierra had a stellar defense with tackles left and right, but Coleville again managed to catch Sierra off guard and make a touchdown. In response, Falcon Ryan Salerno passed to Seth Houghton, who made it to the 35 yard line. Then, Salerno made a rushing touchdown and Schinzing kicked the point after. After the kickoff, Coleville went back on offense and made another touchdown, leaving the score at 35-32, Sierra leading by a slim margin.

At the beginning of the 4th, the Coleville Wolves once again start on offense. Coleville scored a touchdown, but missed the conversion. Isaiah Jarret ran the ball to the 24 yard line at kickoff. Salerno made a pass to Jake Cummings, who ran it down to the 14 yard line. Salerno makes it to the 4 yard line, then the 2 yard line. At that point, it’s the 4th down and Sierra’s only option was to push through a massive garble of blockers for a rushing touchdown. Sierra made it for a final touchdown, but missed the conversion. For the final two minutes of the game, the Falcons kept a solid defense, the final score being 41-38.

Stats: Senior Zach Ferenz had 20 tackles, 12 solo, 8 assisted, and an interception. Junior Ryan Salerno had 118 passing yards, 221 rushing yards, and 4 rushing touchdowns. Junior Jake Cummings had 89 receiving yards, 1 touchdown, 3 sacks, and 3 QB hurries. Senior Cameron Drudge had 10 rushing yards, 1 interception, defended 2 passes, and had 1 touchdown. Sophomore Seth Houghton had 16 receiving yards and 13 tackles, 8 solo and 3 assisted. Junior Sterling Funk caused 1 fumble, defended 1 pass, and had 11 tackles, 6 solo and 5 assisted. Junior Tyrale Luken and sophomore Austin Stone both had 2 QB hurries. Junior Alex Westre had 1 recovered fumble, 23 rushing yards, and 13 receiving yards. Logan Schinzing had 4 kickoffs, which was 284 yards total, 1 touchback, and 5 PAT kicks.

Sierra Lutheran played Mineral County in the last home games of the season on Tuesday night, October 27th. The Lady Falcons played extremely well, winning both matches.

The varsity team had been practicing hard, and it showed on the court. They won their first set 25-20. The next set was even better with a final score 25 -9. The Lady Falcons stumbled a little in the third set, losing 19-25, but then brought it back in the fourth set to win 25-23. Claire Cochran had 10 aces, 17 digs, and 8 assists. Gabby Kale had 6 blocks and 9 aces. Both Gabby Kale and Grace Bonafede had 3 kills. The Varsity team honored their two graduating seniors, Sarah Jarrett and Olivia Zeron (pictured above, with parents).

The Lady Falcons JV squad showed strength in their games also. In the first set, they dominated the game, winning 25-11. The second set was more spread out, having good volleys throughout. JV made some mistakes but eventually fought it out and won 25-19. Charis Wheeler had 5 aces.
